Wheel of Time: The Great Hunt (Book 2)

Book Review

Finished book #2 of Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series and it took foreverrrr. Two months of the year which is like 15% of the year.

The first book dragged a bit but this book hit the ground running and was very entertaining. Things happened in the book that I didn’t anticipate for 2-3 more books. The contrast between the two books reminded me of Three Body Problem (to a lesser degree obviously if you’re familiar w/ book two of 3BP lol).

Back to the Wheel Of Time series, the second book left readers on an anti-cliff-hanger yet again. If the series was only two books long, the ending would’ve been good enough. He did the same for the first book as well. There are like 8 books left in the series tho so we’ll see what happens.

Ethics will cost ya…

I have ripped the majority of my (legal) Kindle collection to Calibre so that I can import them into KO Reader and read them on my eInk reader (Boox Nova 2). I will do a blog post on my reading setup someday soon. I like downloading a book from my server and unwinding on the couch, even if it’s a sign that I’m getting washed out here.

Reading eBooks opens things up re: ‘procuring’ books. With that said, I’m not interested in living the Arr lifestyle… I hear the rationalizing that it is a way to “stick it to the man” or hear it framed as a righteous protest against evil corporations but it always struck me as a bit flimsy.

I do think most corporations aint shit, but choose to vote w/ my wallet. As long as I have enough money to afford it, I might as well support the authors that entertain me. Growing up, I probably pirated enough music during the Kazaa/Limewire era to last a lifetime anyways.

But yeah, unless there’s a big Kindle discoune on a book, I plan on making all future purchases w/ retailers that sell non-DRM editions. For example, I purchased the 3rd book as an ePub and didn’t have to jump through hoops (albeit small) to read it in KO Reader. Less money given to Amazon too fwiw.

…But so will quirky hobbies

The frugal part of me acknowledges that I could’ve read the book legally for free from the library… in fact I just checked and there are 30 physical copies available that I could’ve grabbed. I’m a fan of self-hosted content and stat-tracking tho so oh well. I recently found out about Kompanion and plan on spinning that up as well.

Stats

Here are my reading stats… IIRC, in mid-February I randomly started binging Friends and my evening reading took a nose-dive: My photo My photo My photo
